UTI or Yeast Infection?

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) and yeast infections often have a lot in common but there are some telltale differences between the two, including their cause. UTIs are caused by bacteria from the GI tract. According to Jill Purdie, M.D., OBGYN and medical director at Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group, the urinary tract covers a lot of ground, and both the kidneys and bladder are included under this umbrella. “Most commonly when a person says they have a UTI, they are referring to a bladder infection,” said Dr. Purdie. Yeast infections, on the other hand, are caused by an overgrowth of the fungus Candida. “It is estimated that as many as 70% of women will have one at some point in their life,” noted Dr. Purdie, who pointed to things like increased sugar levels, a lowered immune system and fluctuating estrogen levels as potential risk factors.
