What to know about your infant's cough

Hearing a baby’s cough can be unsettling but being armed with information about why infants cough provides some reassurance for parents and caregivers as well as when it may be cause for concern. Whopping cough is a serious illness that may require hospitalization. “Children under 2 months are at highest risk,” said Anastasia Gentles, M.D., pediatrician and medical director at Pediatrix® Urgent Care of Houston. Getting the DTaP and Tdap vaccines, which offer protection against diphtheria, tetanus as well as pertussis (aka whooping cough), is the most effective way to prevent whooping cough, advised Dr. Gentles. She recommends all close family members be vaccinated as “the other children and adults in the house are the way that they [babies] catch it.”
