A rare condition called galactorrhea causes up to 20% of women who aren’t pregnant, and some who have never been pregnant, to experience a milky discharge from one or both breasts. It is generally caused by an elevation in prolactin, the hormone produced by the brain in the pituitary gland to aid in lactation. “Galactorrhea is the condition of having milky nipple discharge that does not occur during pregnancy or the postpartum period,” said Jill Purdie, M.D., OBGYN and practice medical director of Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group.
