About

Dr. Schlegel hails from bucolic Coshocton, Ohio where she knew in kindergarten she would work in Pediatrics - but wanted to travel and live a life full of adventure. After finishing her undergraduate studies at the University of Cincinnati, she served across the country with the national community service program, AmeriCorps, worked as a service-learning coordinator at Delgado Community College in New Orleans, earned her Masters in Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology (before it became a household word) at Columbia University in New York, and built public-private partnerships in Los Angeles with Education Pioneers and the LA Fund for Public Education.

Eventually, she found her way back to medicine and earned her Doctorate in Osteopathic (D.O.) Medicine from Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, Carolinas Campus in Spartanburg, SC with clinical rotations at Spartanburg Medical Center, Aiken Regional, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, St. Christopher's Hospital for Children (Philadelphia), Children's Hospital New Orleans, Children's National (D.C.), The Brooklyn Hospital Center, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). She completed her pediatric residency at the University of Illinois, Chicago with additional training at John H Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Advocate Aurora Health (Lutheran and Christ Hospitals), and Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Dr. Schlegel is passionate about pediatric health and education, quality of life, injury prevention, working with kiddos with medical complexity (including championing the SeriousFun Camps!), shared decision-making with families, and community engagement. Outside the hospital's four walls, she loves to travel and explore Richmond - please give her all of your favorite recommendations!
