A hernia is where tissue pokes through a weak spot in the muscle abdomen or groin. It is most common in males but can occur in females as well.

Symptoms and Treatment:

  • In minor cases, it should not create much discomfort and will push back into the stomach.
  • In more severe cases, the hernia could cause vomiting, tenderness of the area, fever and diarrhea and will need surgery. A laparoscopic hernia repair takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes. An open hernia repair takes approximately 60 minutes. Following your surgery, you will be transported to recovery, where you will be monitored for 1-2 hours until you are fully awake. You will be encouraged to take fluids, get up and move about as soon as possible. You will have limited activity for a minimum of 14 days post-procedure.
