A cholecystectomy is a surgical procedure to remove your gallbladder, which is a common treatment for many types of gallbladder disease. This common procedure is done laparoscopically and avoids many of the risks of an open procedure. You may experience symptoms such as biliary colic, which will cause intense gallbladder pain. Other symptoms may include jaundice, swelling of the abdomen and large gallbladder polyps.

Treatment:

  • A laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) takes approximately 60 minutes.
  • Following your surgery, you will be transported to recovery, where you will be monitored for 1-2 hours until you are fully awake. You will be encouraged to take fluids, get up and move about as soon as possible.
  • Post-procedure, no lifting anything greater than 5-10 lbs. for two weeks, no driving for 3-4 days after surgery while taking prescribed medication and walk as much as tolerated. Listen to your body.
