Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) occurs when stomach contents move up the esophagus. It normally occurs during or after a meal. Complications can include weight loss, irritability, feeding refusal, a hoarse voice, pneumonia, cough, wheezing and difficulty swallowing or breathing.

Diagnosis and Treatment:

  • Your doctor will conduct a physical examination and, if necessary, additional tests, such as an X-ray, endoscopy or esophageal pH probe.
  •  Depending on the patient's age, medication is often recommended to reduce acid in the stomach. Surgery is rarely needed.
